Architectural shingles are the most common roof in Southwest Florida, and when they're the right product installed the right way, they hold up well against our summer storms. But not all shingles are built the same, and the label on the bundle doesn't tell the whole story. Here's how to choose the best shingles for Florida wind, what the ratings really mean, and why installation matters just as much as the product.
What makes a shingle wind-resistant?
Wind ratings: ASTM D3161 and ASTM D7158
Shingles sold for high-wind areas are tested to industry standards. The two you'll see most often are:
- ASTM D3161: A fan-induced wind test. Class F is the highest classification in this test.
- ASTM D7158: A wind uplift test. Class H is the highest classification in this test.
When you're comparing shingles for a Florida home, look for products that carry both ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H.
The sealant strip
A shingle's real strength in wind comes from how well it bonds to the shingle below. Florida's heat activates the sealant strip, but it needs to be installed correctly and given time to seal. Shingles installed with wrong nail placement, or in a way that keeps the strip from bonding, can lift in a storm even if the product is rated for high wind.
The whole system, not just the shingle
The best wind performance comes from the full roof system: deck attachment, underlayment, drip edge, starter strip, field shingles, and hip and ridge caps. Manufacturers' highest wind warranties generally require their matching accessories and specific installation methods.
Why we recommend TAMKO Titan XT for high-wind areas
Epoch Roofing is a TAMKO Pro Platinum™ Certified Contractor, and for homes in high-wind areas we often recommend TAMKO Titan XT architectural shingles. According to TAMKO:
- Titan XT carries a 160 mph limited wind warranty for 15 years when installed with TAMKO starter and hip-and-ridge shingles according to TAMKO's High Wind application instructions.
- Titan XT meets ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H.
Always review the manufacturer's current warranty documents for the full terms and conditions. We'll walk you through them before you choose.
We install all major shingle brands. Titan XT is our recommendation for wind-exposed homes, but if your HOA requires a specific brand or color, or you prefer another manufacturer, we'll install it to the manufacturer's specifications.

Installation matters as much as the shingle
Even the best-rated shingle can fail if it isn't installed correctly. When comparing contractors, ask:
Is the contractor licensed in Florida?
Roofing work in Florida requires a state license. Epoch Roofing holds FL License #CCC1332554. You can verify any contractor's license with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
Will they follow the manufacturer's high-wind installation instructions?
That includes nail placement, nail count, starter strips at the eaves and rakes, and matching hip-and-ridge caps.
Will the roof be permitted and inspected?
Re-roofs in Florida require a permit and inspections. We handle the permit and inspections for you.
What warranty do they offer?
Every roof Epoch installs comes with our written 5-year workmanship warranty, plus the manufacturer's material warranty.
Coastal and attic considerations
Wind isn't the only stress on a Florida shingle roof. Homes near the Gulf, bays and Intracoastal take salt air every day, so drip edge, flashing and fasteners should be chosen for coastal exposure. Inside the attic, balanced intake and exhaust ventilation helps limit heat buildup, which is easier on shingles over the long run. When we quote a shingle roof, we look at the whole system, not just the product on the bundle.
Shingle vs. tile vs. metal in wind
Shingles are an excellent value and perform well when installed to code with the right product. Tile and metal are also strong options in high-wind areas, with different costs and looks. If you're weighing all three, read our tile vs. metal roof comparison and our Sarasota roof replacement cost guide. Signs your shingles aren't holding up
- Shingles missing after a storm
- Creased or lifted tabs (a sign the seal has broken)
- Heavy granule loss in gutters
- Curling or cupping edges
